Are Humans still Evolving?
It seems to me that humans are undergoing a process of transformation at the moment. I’m not suggesting that we’re changing physically. We don’t seem to be taller, or morphing into a new shape. No – it’s the quality of our connection that’s different. Deeper. Profound, in a casual kind of way. I’ve noticed less day-to-day small talk. I’ve even noticed more openness to dimensions beyond the 3D world – all that which we can see, hear, touch and understand through conventional science.
It’s not just inside my bubble of trusted friends that I’m having these kind of conversations. People all over the world are opening up with their thoughts and ideas in a new way, both online and in real life.
Let’s take a few chats that I’ve had in the last couple of days, for example, with people I’ve previously only connected with on a business level.
Yesterday, a well respected local businesswoman and changemaker gave me a quick call to ask a question regarding a mutual client. That quick call turned into a wonderful conversation around our collective consciousness and experience. She emailed me later on to say she was keen to meet up and chat further.
Today, I was having coffee with a friend who I met a few years ago through a networking event. He told me that he was recently talking with his business partner about what it must be like to be a woman. Both agreed that they hoped they would not reincarnate as women in future lives – at least not until they’re strong enough to. This was fascinating to me on multiple levels. One: that two ordinary, down to earth middle aged men were casually discussing reincarnation. Two: that they recognised the struggles that the female of their species face. And three: their acknowledgement of the strength and resilience of women.
After our coffee I wandered up the road to my coworking space, and bumped into another friend and fellow PLATF9RM member. We were looking at the PLATF9RM events calendar together, and noticed an interesting event named Connection Jam. He suddenly told me that he’s feeling less and less tolerant to small talk, recently. He’s seeking a new kind of depth in conversation. He wants to explore the ‘big stuff’. I couldn’t agree more.
My Mum made an interesting point when we were talking on the phone the other day. She’d been thinking about how different this time that we’re living through is to the 1980s. Sure, the clothes were cool and the music was incredible, but she describes a ‘spiritual contraction’ in the 80s, where people became obsessed with money and material things, and spirituality was deemed ridiculous and fanciful. It was as if the human mind had been tamed – trapped, even, inside a room without windows. But now, she says, many of us seem to be breaking free. It’s becoming okay to have these conversations again.
For strategists and changemakers, this broadening of perspective and deepening of connection could be magical. The less ‘boxed in’ our minds are, the bigger the change we can create. I’m trying to train myself to lean into my creativity and intuition more and more, so that I can make good things happen more easily and frequently. Conversely, I let a client override my intuition recently, and the result was a headache for everyone involved.
So. Are we evolving? Or are we just sick of the mundanity of life? I’d love to hear your thoughts…
